Army Wins Again

About 60 residents and guests attended the 119th playing of the Army-Navy football game in The Club on Saturday, December 8. This friendly rivalry has gone on for several years at PVE.

This year, the Army crowd had more to cheer about than the Navy crowd as Army won their third game in a row. Everyone enjoyed the bountiful tailgate buffet that was laid out by Dining Services. Early arrivals put up some decorations to make it a festive feeling. Spike Flertzheim (Army) brought his “Go Army Beat Navy” flag. Patty McNamara (Army) was seen wearing husband Bill’s West Point dress uniform jacket. Her comment, “He must have been a midget when he was at West Point,” since she had trouble getting the jacket buttoned.

The final score was Army 17 and Navy 10. Army would go on to the Armed Forces Bowl in Houston and Navy would clean out their lockers and head home for the holidays.

By tradition, at the end of the game the losing team’s Alma Mater is sung first followed by the winning team’s Alma Mater. As the Navy fans at the game in Philadelphia and in The Club sang their Alma Mater, “Navy Blue and Gold,” you could hear them say, “There’s always next year,” and indeed there is. This year, as the winning team, Army’s Alma Mater was sung last and their fans were saying, “Can’t wait for next year,” and indeed they can’t.
