When most people imagine retiring in California wine country, Napa Valley comes to mind first. It’s a reasonable assumption, but it misses one of Northern California’s best-kept secrets. Suisun Valley, a small agricultural appellation in Solano County, sits just east of Napa with its own long winemaking tradition, a fraction of the crowds, and a pace of life that’s genuinely hard to find in better-known wine regions. In 2025, USA Today named it the No. 1 Best Wine Region in the U.S. That recognition is well-earned, and for those thinking about where to spend their retirement years, it’s worth paying attention to.
Suisun Valley: Wine Country on Its Own Terms
Suisun Valley is part of the California North Coast appellation, the same prestigious wine region that includes Napa and Sonoma. Its approximately 3,000 acres of vineyards with more than 20 varieties of wine grapes and currently boasts more than a dozen active wineries in the region. What sets it apart isn’t just the wine. It’s the atmosphere: family-owned operations where the winemaker is often the one pouring your tasting, prices that don’t require a second look, and vineyards with room to breathe.
For retirees who want wine country living without the tourist congestion of Napa, Suisun Valley offers something genuinely different.
Wine Country, Right Outside Our Door
One of the most immediate pleasures of life at Paradise Valley Estates is how close all of this is. Here are five wineries within 6 miles of our campus.
Wooden Valley Winery has been family-owned and operated since 1933, making it one of the oldest continuously running wineries in the region. Open daily, picnic-friendly, and welcoming to all, it’s the kind of place that earns regulars.
Caymus-Suisun brings the pedigree of one of Napa’s most celebrated families to Suisun Valley. The Wagner family opened this tasting room in 2022, drawn by the valley’s exceptional fruit and pastoral character. Their Suisun-exclusive wines include Grand Durif (a Petite Sirah), The Walking Fool red blend, and Bay Rosé. The tasting room itself was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the architecture firm behind Apple Store locations, and features floor-to-ceiling glass and a cantilevered roof that frames sweeping views of the vineyards and Howell Mountains.
Vézer Family Vineyard is a boutique, family-operated winery with two locations along Suisun Valley Road: Vézer Family Vineyard and Blue Victorian. A single visit can take you through two distinct tasting experiences, and the Vézer family also operates Manka’s Grill, a well-regarded restaurant in Manka’s Corner. The community following here is loyal for good reason.
Bally Keal Estate brings something entirely its own to the valley. Founded with a commitment to warm Irish hospitality, the 80-acre estate houses a winery, brewery, and distillery alongside a beautifully designed event venue. Live music, relaxed outdoor spaces, and no pretension make it a standout.
Mangels Vineyards is an intimate, dog-friendly spot with outdoor seating shaded by massive redwood trees. Weekend live music, approachable wines, and a genuinely unhurried atmosphere make it an easy favorite.
A Location That Opens Doors
Beyond the valley itself, the broader location is one of the most practical arguments for retiring here. Fairfield sits 45 miles from both San Francisco and Sacramento, and just 15 miles from Napa Valley, which means world-class dining, cultural institutions, and medical centers are all within reach without requiring city living.
The climate reinforces it: Mediterranean weather means warm, dry summers and mild winters, with the kind of year-round outdoor living that draws people to Northern California in the first place. For those who want more than wine tastings to fill their days, there’s no shortage of options nearby.
Retirement, Rooted in the Right Place
At Paradise Valley Estates, location has always been part of the value. Our 76-acre campus in Fairfield puts residents within easy reach of everything Suisun Valley and the broader Northern California region have to offer, with the comfort of a nonprofit life plan community that has called this place home since 1997.
