Fitness Served a la Golf Cart

The mission of LeadingAge is to expand the world of possibilities for aging. The organization boasts more than 6,000 members and partners in 39 states representing the entire field of aging services.

Each year LeadingAge provides an educational and learning conference for its membership. This year’s conference presented the debut of “Idea Sharks” fashioned after the popular television show, Shark Tank.

As Fitness and Living Well Manager, I strive to incorporate whole-person wellness strategies in day-to-day life here at PVE.

A call for submissions went out to the membership to submit an idea, innovation or best practice. Each presenter faced a panel of sharks that either endorsed or rejected the idea. If the idea was innovative and presented a solution to a problem in aging services, the sharks awarded up to $250 to the guest in the shark tank.

As the PVE representative, my idea was called Mind Body Fitness 2U (MBF2U). When executed, MBF2U will provide a team of fitness specialists to travel via golf cart to resident homes and apartments to provide fitness assessments and customize a program for those who are isolated and not engaged. The program includes both physical and mental areas of opportunity using such programs as Lumosity and Brain HQ. IPads were introduced to track outcomes for fitness, cognitive training and progress reports.

The sharks loved the idea and paid the maximum in shark dollars. Representing PVE was truly an honor. I plan to use part of the winnings to support our Nustepping for Alzheimer’s event next year. Once again, PVE rises to the Pinnacle of Excellence at Idea Sharks LeadingAge Conference.
