Bocce at PVE

The Bombardiers seem to be running away from the rest of the league. They are currently 3 ½ games ahead of the second-place team, the Warriors. The Court Jesters are currently in third. After that it is very bunched up. At this point the teams have about 6-7 games to play before the season ends at the end of September. Most teams are still in the running, so continue to have fun and enjoy the great game of bocce.

So, what is the history of this game we play? The first known documentation of bocce was in 5200 B.C. with an Egyptian tomb painting that depicted two boys playing. The game spread throughout the Middle East and Asia, where it was eventually adopted by the Greeks and passed on to the Romans. The game was played by everyone – young or old, man or woman – thanks to its ease and versatility. During his time unifying and nationalizing Italy, Giuseppe Garibaldi popularized bocce in Italy. Today, it is an Olympic sport. Because of its versatility – enjoyable at virtually any age, athletic ability, and location – bocce has become the third most played sport in the world.

What is the most played sport in the world? Originating in America, volleyball boasts an impressive estimated global participation figure of 998 million people. Indoor and outdoor versions of the sport are played all over the world, with over 220 affiliated national federations registered to volleyball’s global governing body the ‘FIVB’.

Second place goes to basketball. The Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) estimates that a minimum of 450 million people play the sport around the world, be it recreationally or through structured competitions. Legendary figures in the world of basketball such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Steph Curry, have aided the rise in global popularity of the sport from its American roots.

Football (Soccer) is the most watched sport in the world with over 4 billion people watching worldwide. Enjoy this last month of bocce and our Friday continental breakfasts. We have begun planning for the 2023 season already.
