Strengthening Community Connections
One of the greatest challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic is the ongoing need for physical distancing to prevent the spread. With seniors already at greater risk for social isolation in the everyday world, many are spending more time than ever — alone — at home trying to safeguard themselves and their health.
Paradise Valley Estates residents have found creative ways to bridge the isolation for themselves and others throughout the pandemic.
Two residents, Caroline Keller and Judy Mulenburg, created FaceTime with Friends to help break the potential isolation created by social distancing and to expand socializing opportunities that followed the stringent safety guidelines required by the dangers of COVID-19. FaceTime with Friends uses face-to-face virtual calls to connect residential living residents with Laurel Creek skilled nursing community residents. The callers volunteer time to connect with fellow residents who have indicated they’d like to be called or residents whose families ask that their loved one be called.
Each One to Reach One is another connection builder designed for residents who live alone. Residents who volunteer for the program set aside time to make weekly phone calls, initiate video chats or write and mail letters — whatever is preferred by the recipient. Whether a FaceTime chat, Zoom video conference or a mailed letter, the regular weekly activity is beneficial whether you’re the sender or the receiver.
Both programs, created by Paradise Valley Estates residents, are safe, fun options to get better acquainted with neighbors or to talk to friends without the risks of meeting in person.
