Power House Specialty Class

Has it been awhile since you’ve been over to the Power House for a workout? Do you feel like you might be a little rusty on how to operate the machines? Would you prefer to work out when you know someone will be there to assist you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Power House Specialty Class is perfect for you!

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 – 3 p.m., a fitness trainer is on site at the Power House to help you navigate the exercise machines and to offer experienced tips on proper form and technique for each machine. The blue strength training machines are HUR equipment developed by Helsinki University, and are specifically designed to help older adults safely build and maintain muscle.

If you’ve already had an orientation to the Power House, your workout information will be in the computer system. That means all you’ll need to do is get on the machines and start working out. The Power House also has a variety of cardio equipment, such as NuStep machines, a treadmill and a recumbent bike.

Still need some encouragement to lace up your sneakers and head over to the Power House? Consider the findings of these two studies:

1. According to a National Institutes of Health study, people from 65 to 82 years of age experienced significant improvement in strength and balance after twelve weeks of strength training. Since muscle weakness is associated with increased risk of falls and hip fractures, strength training two to three times per week can help prevent the potentially devastating consequences of loss of balance.

2. In a University of British Columbia study, researchers found that regular cardio training boosts the size of the brain area involved in memory and learning.

So what are you waiting for? Visit the Power House and do something great for your body and mind!
