Bocce Play at PVE

A sure sign of spring is when the PVE Bocce Committee assembles all willing residents for the upcoming Spring Tournament.  In the spirit of good fun, the ‘minutes’ of the first meeting on March 14 were put in verse form for all to enjoy!  What a great start for our second decade of bocce competition.  With 18 teams and 133 total players, about 30% of PVE residents, bocce is definitely ‘in the air’.  Bocce is a game for all ages and even those with some physical limitations, such as limited sight or the need to hang-on-to-something for stability, are accommodated on our court.

Friendly competition is not only on the court, but in team names – such as COURT JESTERS, THE DREAM TEAM, SIX SHOOTERS, FLAG COURTERS, FIREBALLS, HOLY ROLLERS, THE ERRATIC FOUR, THE WILD TURKEYS, and TORTILLA FLAT FLAMINGOS – and in team uniforms – including neon colored T-shirts, flamboyant colored critters, and other creative costumes.  Some say team uniforms help win games…others admit to team bonding with shirts and shoes alike…. and still others scoff at such silly thinking…all of which is a testament to the spirit of diversity and variety in a community of ‘mature’ fun-lovin’ people.  We even have a team mascot dog on campus that goes by the name of ‘Bocce’!

This year we enjoy an improved and safer bocce court with new hand rails and balls.  A continental breakfast provided by Dining Services each Friday morning brings out the crowd to socialize and watch the Friday morning competitions.  Join it…watch it…feel it…it’s great fun at PVE!
