Paradise Valley Estates, a continuing care retirement community in Fairfield, now offers a year-round Farmer’s Market for residents, their guests and employees. The Farmer’s Market takes place in the center of campus every Tuesday, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM and features an abundant array of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and flowers from Petrill’s Farm Fresh Produce and Stems Florist.
Fruits and vegetables at the market include specific forms of produce indigenous to
California growing seasons, such as the stone fruit season, tomato seasonal, berry season, and others. The opportunity to purchase fresh cut flowers onsite as well gives Paradise Valley Estates residents an added lifestyle convenience.
Jan Olson, Fitness and Living Well Manager of Paradise Valley Estates, says community events such as the Farmer’s Market engender a number of exceptional benefits for older adults. “The Farmer’s Market experience addresses several dimensions of wellness that are integral to the health and vitality of seniors.” she said. “Having the opportunity to come together with friends and shop for fresh food and flowers can impact a person’s social, physical and even spiritual well being.”
The Market has been very popular with residents this summer.; “I love convenience of having top quality, great tasting produce right here at Paradise Valley Estates”, said Maragret Brockhouse. “I usually go to my Yoga fitness class and then shop at the Farmer’s Market”.
Many residents also enjoy the convenience of a cashless payment system, with the opportunity to charge purchases to their monthly accounts. Employees of Paradise Valley Estates are equally enthusiastic about the Farmer’s Market, with many staff members making the market a regular destination of Tuesdays.
“The Farmer’s Market is a great example of Paradise Valley Estates is promoting healthy choices and positive behaviors for everyone here,” said Jim Mertz, the community’s Executive Director. “Not only are we making it easy for both residents and employees to say “YES” to fresh fruits and vegetables, we’re giving ourselves another outlet for socializing and getting to know each other as neighbors.”
